Alberto Santos-Dumont

Today is the 120th anniversary of Alberto Santos-Dumont’s flight around the Eiffel Tower!

On the afternoon of October 19, 1901, Santos-Dumont flew his specifically-designed Dirigible Number 6 from the Parc Saint Cloud to the Eiffel Tower and back; whoever could complete the flight in less than 30 minutes would win the Deutsch de la Meurthe. Alberto’s flight lasted 29 minutes and 30 seconds. He donated the 100,000-franc prize money to his technicians and the poor.
