1931 Curtiss-Wright Travel Air 12Q
In 1931, Curtiss-Wright introduced a new line of biplanes, including the “Sport Trainer” model 12Q. Power was a 90 hp, 4-cylinder inline Wright “Gipsy” engine, which was of British design but produced in the U.S. under license. As the “Sport Trainer” moniker describes, this aircraft was used both for training new pilots by flight schools and as a “fun” airplane for licensed pilots. Shortly after the 12Q was introduced, Curtiss-Wright produced an updated version with a radial engine, the 12W, one of which is also in the Kelch Museum.
