“The Sky’s The Limit” Quilt Art Show Opening Reception

Join us for a special reception to present “The Sky’s The Limit,” an exhibit of 35 handmade quilt and textile art pieces by Sun Prairie quilt artist, Misty Cole. Quilters, crafters, artists, pilots, aviation enthusiasts, and anyone who enjoys creativity will love this special exhibit combining craftsmanship, aviation, history, and art!

  • This casual reception is open to the public to drop in from 1pm to 3pm on Sunday, April 12th.
  • At 2pm, artist Misty Cole will give a presentation explaining her creative process and techniques, followed by a Q&A.
  • Light refreshments will be served courtesy of local sponsors.

Thirteen of these works are new and based on The Kelch Aviation Museum’s collections of flyable antique aircraft and aviation artifacts. The second set of art quilts in “The Sky’s the Limit” were made in 2016 based on the collection at the College Park Aviation Museum in College Park, MD, where they were displayed in 2017. CPAM is a Smithsonian Affiliated Museum, and is the oldest continuously operating airfield in North America.

We are thrilled to showcase Misty’s incredible original artwork, showing how aviation continues to inspire in so many ways.

About the artist: Misty Cole studied painting and drawing at LSU-Baton Rouge, and came to quilting as a painter. In 2000, she saw a show of contemporary art quilts that changed the path of her artistic career. She has now been quilting 22 years, and it continues to challenge her artistically.

Misty learned all the traditional quilting conventions and expectations, and now she enjoys breaking the rules. She loves mixing traditional hand-sewing techniques with machine techniques; vintage quilt blocks with contemporary materials and found objects; needle and thread with ink, paint and marker. Many of her quilts require innovative engineering solutions to complete on her small domestic sewing machine or by hand. Misty’s work has been exhibited at the Great Wisconsin Quilt Show in Madison, WI; the International Quilt Festival in Houston, TX; the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, KY; the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham, UK; and many others.
